SUMMARY

About: The Emergency Campaign to Support Higher Education is a grassroots movement of students, alumni, community leaders, faculty, and staff organizing to defend and expand access, autonomy, and excellence in higher education. The attack on colleges and universities is an attack on the foundations of a free society—a calculated power grab aimed at undermining social and racial justice. No institution can withstand the pressure alone. The best answer is a unified national grassroots campaign to defend the autonomy of colleges and universities while fighting to make higher education more accessible, affordable, and relevant for working families.

Our goal is to build a national movement to push campus leaders and public officials to:

  • Champion the role of higher education in a strong, inclusive, and democratic society
  • Fight for federal and state policies to make higher education affordable and accessible to working families
  • Oppose cuts to student aid and research funding that would undermine local economies and put post-secondary education out of reach of many young people
  • Resist federal political meddling in teaching, research, admissions, and hiring

We will work to build (or connect existing) organizing teams for each pillar on every campus. And we will support these teams in coordinating to build power at their institutions and drive a national campaign to expand access to higher education rather than shrinking it, to protect the vital role colleges and universities play in making the U.S. a prosperous and democratic society.

The Opportunity: We seek an experienced senior organizer to lead this multi-constituency campaign. This role requires exceptional political acumen, diplomatic skills, and the ability to unite diverse stakeholders who have not necessarily worked together before —including labor groups,  reform-oriented administrators, students, and community organizations—around a common anti-authoritarian pro-reform agenda.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive campaign strategy in service of the goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key organizational leaders and stakeholders who lead higher education constituencies, organizations, and networks
  • Speak publicly at events and in the media to communicate the goals and strategy of the campaign
  • Manage a team that includes a national organizing manager, communications staff, and 8-10 community organizers working to support multi-stakeholder campus organizing in targeted states and regions
  • Travel extensively to engage with campus leaders, attend regional events, and expand coalition reach
  • Facilitate dialogue between traditionally separate constituencies (labor/admin, students/admin) to advance the goals of the campaign
  • Manage and expand a fundraising strategy to resource the work of the campaign
  • Provide visionary leadership while maintaining a collaborative, low-ego approach

QUALIFICATIONS

We would love to talk to you if you have some (not necessarily all) of these experiences

  • Proven track record in high-level coalition building and campaign leadership
  • Direct base-building organizing experience
  • Strong political, diplomatic, and strategic communication skills
  • Experience working across diverse organizational structures and cultures
  • Comfort with extensive travel and relationship-building
  • Demonstrated ability to work with foundations, funders, and other stakeholders to resource effective campaigns
